AFAIK, no, can't do real time update unless all the source sheets are
open locally. I could be wrong.

Failing that it might be possible to write some VBA to force linked
values to update on a timer.

What exactly doesn't work? What (formula) are you using to get data from
external workbooks? What is the error?

IME, some formulae do not work with linked workbooks unless the source
book is open locally.
