Well done Nikhil, it sounds like you've worked this out yourself and my
suggestion was just a diversion!
now that you have ticked 'always open with' then I think so. the only thing
to look out for is that Excel 2007 has more than one file extension for files
so if there are other problems in future you may need to go through this loop
again for the other extensio.

Maybe one of the MVPs can confirm (I'm just an excel user who has learned a
lot fom these boards and so I try to post back to them when I can. I have
access to 2007 on a company machine but I wlways try to use the older machine
with 2003 on it if I can! Not used to the ribbon yet.).

tried to open an excel 2007 file using excel 2003 I was automatiaclly asked

Hopefully if you install this then you should be asked if you should convert

If you are trying to do this at work and you aren't allowed to do downloads
then I think you have to ask the originator if they can save the file in a
2003 compatible version.

If you already HAVE this, or if you download it and it doesn't work, then
could you post back with the file extension that the original file has?
