Default Formatting column

I have created a Pivot Table. I have a field that I dragged as a column on
the table. The field contains numbers that I thought were formatted in the
spreadsheet as text. But, the Pivot table shows some of the numbers on the
right side of the column and some on the left side of the column. I think
the spreadsheet is treating some as a number instead of text. What can I do
in the spreasheet to make all the rows format to text?
thanks
