I know this must be a really dumb question, but" what do you mean by :"by
default cells are locked"? Thanks

No.
IS :" all cells are locked by default"
Try: FORMATCELLSPROTECTION
Now it only works when the worksheet is protected.

Could be...
Default is an option that is selected automatically unless an alternative is specified
Also...
