In which case you need to look again at your CF formula, to make sure that
whichever cell you are trying to format is affected by the appropriate cell.

It sounds as if you've formatted row 2 with a formula referring to row 1.

Make sure you keep the $ sign in front of the column
Then for the no X do the same thing but replace the = sign with <

=And($A1<"X",$B1<"X",$C1<"X",$D1<"X")
