Click on the box at the intersection of the row and column identifiers
in order to select the whole sheet, then click on Format | Cells |
Number tab, then select Text and OK.

Hope this helps.

Formatting cells to text is not the answer to your problem.

It may be a workaround but you have something else happening.

I would be looking for why Excel hangs when you type in letters when cells are
formatted to General.

General is exactly that..........General............Excel should not barf when
you enter letters, numbers, dates or whatever.

Does this "hang" occur with every workbook/sheet?

Existing ones? New ones?

I wouldn't know where to start with this one.

Existing workbooks could have some code attached but new workbooks could not
come under that situation.

Do you have any strange add-ins running when you open Excel?

Go into ToolsAdd-ins and uncheck everything.

Close and re-start Excel. Still the same "hanging"?

If not, re-check each add-in one at a time until it hangs again.
