Default Excel file is no longer "in a recofnizable format" problem?

Hi

I was working on an excel file which has been damaged. When I try to open
it, the message "this file is not in a recognizable format" pops up. Is
there any way to fix this issue?

Thanks

You may want to try OpenOffice.org and try opening, then saving (as a new
name). It's been known to save some (not always all) data, formatting, formulas
and code.

http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD

If the file is really important, there are commercial recovery services. I've
never used it, but you might want to check into:

Hi,

You may try Advanced Excel Repair at http://www.datanumen.com/aer/
This tool is rather useful in salvaging damaged Excel xls files.

Julie,

See if it'll open in Word. It could be that someone opened it in Word and saved it,
converting it to a Word document. Damned outrage that that hasn't been fixed in Word all
these releases.
