Default Excel missing from the "open with" command

I use Excel to edit various types of files, such as IIF (QuickBooks list
files). I used to be able to right-click on the file and choose Open With
and then Excel was listed. Recently, I noticed that Excel is not listed and
so I have to browse through the programs menu, and then, even when I choose
excel, it doesn't open. It seems trivial, I know, but I want it to work the
way it used to work!

I ran office diagnostics and it didn't find anything. Any ideas other than
reinstall, because I don't want to deal with that.

I should note that I have no problem opening regular excel files without
having to open excel first, so it's not that.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello SirMatthew
When you right click and select "Open with" go to "Browse" and select Excel.
This should bring it back the next time you select "Open With"
Good Luck

Cimjet,

Thanks for the idea. I didn't write my original question very well. I
tried that. It wouldn't open the file. It opened with something entirely
different, and I am QUITE positive that it was Excel I had chosen. That's
why I'm confounded. I can't even get to it that way.

Thank you for your prompt response! I am going to try it again, now that
I've run the diagnostics and see.

I tried that, again, with no success. I clicked on EXCEL.EXE after clicking
browse and it didn't work. I tried on a TXT file and an IIF file. The IIF
tried to open with QuickBooks and the TXT opened with wordpad, when I clearly
had chosen Excel.

It's just odd! It works when I do this at home.

Default Excel missing from the "open with" command

Try opening Windows Explorer then ToolsFolder OptionFile Types.

Scroll down to IIF file and select and see what it "opens with".

Might be you have to hit "Change" then select Excel if on the list, or browse to
Excel.exe and double-click to change.

I tried that, too. I have to browse to find excel, and then when I do select
it, it acts like I didn't even click on it. When I look through the box that
opens up when you use "open with" every other office application is listed
except Excel. Shouldn't it be on that list? It's not just with IIF files,
but with TXT, too. I am just stumped. I have figured out that this started
after I installed SP1 for Office 2007.

I've tried all of these things, but it still does not work. I can't change
the association of any other files, other than files that are already
associated with Excel. If I browse to Excel, it just doesn't save it. Any
ideas? I really, really, really, don't wish to reinstall.

Default Excel missing from the "open with" command

Dave Peterson helped me out with something similar to this. See if this
helps.

------------
Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking
on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

Maybe one of these will work for you.

OP wants to use Excel to open *.IIF and *.TXT files.

Opening Excel files is not the issue.

Thanks Gord,

The post showed up as a new post. Even though there was the "" at the
beginning of the subject line, I missed that and didn't read past the last
post not realizing this was a string of posts in progress. All I saw was
the last post prior to my reply.

Sorry for my confusion.

Anyone find a solution to this problem? I am experiencing the same thing since I upgraded my MS Office to 2007. I cannot even change the file association to excel. I can change it to WinWord and it opens the iif file but Excel doesn't even show up on the list if apps to choose from. When I browse for it, and select it, it does nothing!

Help.

Have you run Microsoft Office Diagnostics? See Excel Options, Resources.
