Default how to save versions of multiple linked excel files?

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has an answer to this problem I'm facing
which colleagues also face. I sometimes get multiple excel files that are
all interlinked with fomulas. I need to modify them separately but also save
versions in case any of them crashes or I need to go back, but when I save
different versions, the lniks all become ireelevant. Anyway to save versions
but still keep links updated? The other way is to collapse them all into a
humongous file but this gets unwieldy with 50+ sheets... thanks for any good
ideas!
