Default Saved Files Not Opening Cross-Platform

I am using Office 2000 SP2 on XP Pro SP2 and my vendor is using Office 2004
on Mac OSX.

When she saves an Excel file and emails it to me, Windows doesn't recognize
it as an Excel file. I can tell it to open with Excel but that involves
about 3 or 4 extra steps that shouldn't be necessary.

There is no strange issues with the file name.

She did not make any edits to the file name after saving it from within Excel.

It appears that Windows on my computer is not recognizing any form of file
extension on the file.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening or what I could do about it?

Thanks.
