Default Corrupted select option Excel 2003 SP3

I have an ACER laptop (2 yrs old). When I open an XL file and put the cursor
on a cell or try to select an area it goes into a loop and I cannot end the
select action - whichever way I move the mouse (or my keypad if I am not
using a mouse) it keeps selecting. As a result I can't do anything with the
file and the only way out is Alt Ctrl Del. This has happened twice before and
I deleted and reloaded XL, ran SP3 again and then it works for a while then
corrupts again. I now have to take my XL files to another computer and
convert them to Word or other formats. I have no problem with any other
application. Can anyone help. Please!

The F8 key turns Extended selection on and off.
It displays "Ext"in the Status Bar near the clock.

Thans Jims, if only it was that simple but the lockup happens whether the EXT
is on of off and once I move the cursor and it is stuck in select then I
can't operate any other action including turning EXT on or off.
