Default "This file is not in a recognizable format"

Installed Microsoft office 2003 months ago, and then has some problems,
(started saying the product key wasn't valid) and had to reinstall it. It
now won't let me open any of my many saved Excel spreadsheets, created with
the same program before the reinstall. It says: "This file is not in a
recognizable format" Any ideas?
