Default sharing violation

Any time I open a new excel file then save as , whether xls or xlsx, thats
OK. When I add something and try and save again I get some error message
about 'sharing violation' and saving in a temporary file and am told to close
existing file open and rename the temp file. How do I get it to stop doing
this and behave normally?
