Default exel error 1706 microsoft office 2000 sr-1 professional

cannot open my excel at all, it comes up with a message that i need to
install microsoft office 2000 sr-1 professional
could open it before i had problems with aol
do i need an update?
virus?
spyware?
re-install excel?
please reply

If it says you have to install office 2000 sr-1 professional, that's where I'd
start.
