Default Cell displays Formula text

Can anyone explain why cell will display the "text of a formula" instead of
the formula results? I have checked to confirm that the cell is not forced
text (no ' beginning value. When I edit the cell, Excel recognizes that the
cell contains a formula and returns the expected result. The function of the
formula does not seem to part of the issue. I have received this strange
situation with the 'sum' and 'left' functions.
