Default Automatic conversion to scientific numbers

I am trying to create a simple spreadsheet with columns of numbers. I have
formatted each column to a number with no decimal points. However, when I
enter a number, whether it be 1, 2, 3 or 4 digits long, Excel keeps throwing
in trailing zeros, which then returns the scientific value. I have gone back
in and selected the format as Number again and nothing works. Any
suggestions?

Try:

Tools=Options=Edit and uncheck "Fixed Decimal places"
