Default formulas

Hello

I have just finished creating a spreadsheet for a school for sportsday
but on the events sheet.
For example the 100 metre race where it shows the students that came
first second and third I have used cell refrencing that worked but i
want a more reliable formula that will find the student ID, name,
surname, etc. I have tried using vlookup, but that never really
worked.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For VLOOKUP, what is the "lookup" field you use? ID appears to be the likely
candidate.

What formulae have you tried?
