My data hard disk failed and I purchased a data recovery software, "DTI Data
Recovery", and was able to recover my files. I notice that all of the files that I recovered are marked as read only so I go into properties and uncheck the folder. returning to the file, I take another look at it and it is still marked as read only. I can't seem to remove the atribute for some reason. Help........ Oh ya, (going into EXCEL I cannot see the read only check on the ..xls file) Richard |

Instead of changing the attributes of the folder, try changing the attributes of
the files in the folder. ctrl-a is a quick way to select all the files/folders in a folder. What you are suggesting using "ctrl-a" for, is EXACTLY what the tick-box
provides for, you are making too much work for yourself. I was suggesting using ctrl-A to select all the files in a folder.
But you're right, if I change the properties of a folder, I'm prompted to apply the setting to just the folder -- or to all the files and subfolders. But If I choose just the folder, then the files in that folder aren't affected. Actually if you select "just the folder" nothing is affected, attributes
on the folder and the files remain unchanged. Only the "apply to this folder, subfolder and files" actually changes any attributes and then only on the files themselves. I guess I should have written "all the files and the files in all the

That "tick-box" is ONLY used for setting or UNsetting read-only on the
