Default Cannot print excel attachments

I was provided an HP Officejet 4315 printer for my home office about 6 weeks
ago. It will not print any excel documents except those I create on my
laptop. My previous printer, a Xerox, printed all excel documents with no
problem off the same laptop.
The HP printer recognizes the print command by making the same series of
noises common to each print command - then nothing happens. No printed page,
nothing in my print queue.
I have done the following without resolving the problem:
-Made sure that the HP printer is default, and "ready"
-uninstalled and reinstalled software from disk provided 4 times, and from
internet download twice
-performed level 4 deinstall with HP support live, followed by disk cleanup.
(after this, and a reinstall from disk software, I got a single document to
print.)
Now I am back to NO PRINTING OF EXCEL DOCUMENTS.
HP support is trying to say this is an Microsoft application problem. I
think the facts say otherwise, but I am out of ideas, and patience.
Any suggestions? thanks
