Default Opening excel in a new window

Hey guys, I wonder if you can help me - I need to open two Excel
spreadsheets in two seperate windows, so I found the following
instructions from last year on this newsgroup:

"Open window explorer by right clicking the Start button and select
Explore.
Windows Explorer opens, now select "Tools" then on the dropdown menu
select
"Folder Options". In Folder Options , select the "File Types" tab.
Now scroll down until you see the file type of "XLS" under the column
labled
"Extensions" Click on "XLS" to select it.
Next click on the Advanced button and then under "Actions" Click on
"Open"
The Confirm open after download should be checked and the other two....

1. Always show extension
2. Browse same window

Should not be checked.

Next click "Edit"

Under Application used to perform action delete what is there (All of
it)
and copy and paste the following into this space.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\EXCEL.EXE" "%1"

Make sure the box "DDE Message" is clear and the Check Box labled "Use
DDE"
is checked.
You are done, click OK, Ok and Close. Now when you click on XLS files
each
will open in it own window."

This worked fine originally, but I tried to return to the default
settings, but the "%1" refuses to be deleted. Every time I delete it,
it reappears. I am quite worried, because we have a document management
system, and now Excel won't open documents from within this system. It
comes up with the error message "cannot establish DDE session".

Does anyone know how to fix this? I can open Excel files that are on
the C drive in the usual manner, but not within the DMS. I would just
like to go back to the defaults - why won't it let me? Help!

Default Opening excel in a new window

First, I've never had good luck with this kind of change. If I need two windows
of excel, I'll just open one (any way I want) and then use Windows start
button|Run|Excel (and hit enter). Then use File|Open to open workbooks in that
second instance.

You may want to try this to reset excel and windows back to factory defaults.

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

Then test it out.

If it didn't work, I'd find a coworker running the same version of excel and the
same version of windows and look at those settings and just copy them to paper
and type them for my settings.

To reset your file associations, from Start-Run enter "Excel.exe
/regserver" (no quotes, there is a space before the slash). This 'should'
reset things as you want.

Unfortuantely, that didn't work. I guess it's a case of reinstalling
Excel then... I can't use the open workbook thing from within Excel
because of our document management system, which is a bit of a pain.

Saying that, my folder options have reverted to the default, so now I
am completely at a loss to why it doesn't work! (Oh well, it's my last
day...)
