How do I specify an * (asterisk) as a search expression?

* is used as a wildcard for Excel and other MS tools and I need to
subsistitute an '*' for 'a' on a spredsheet.

Prefix it with a tilde ~

Precede the * by a tilde in your search expression: ~*
