Default show 'x' symbol in a list

I want to add 'x' symbol in a list.

I got a excel template, where when I select 'a' , it shows a tick mark.
similarly, I want to add 'x' symbol in the list, so when i select 'x' symbol
in the list, it should show 'x'.

how to do this?

TIA,

--M
