Default Large Project with multiple books

I am doing a large budgeting project with multiple workbooks. The data is in
3 layers where the top layer calls data from all three layers and the second
layer calls data from the second layer and the third layer. Is there any way
to update across layers without opening all the books. So if I change data in
the third layer and open a top layer workbook that relies on data from level
2 that relies on data from level 3, do I have to open the level 2 workbook
first?
