Default Exporting into Excel - different versions??

I have a general question about exporting into Excel. When I export from
another program, it says Excel 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, etc.. but I know Microsoft has
Excel 2000, 2003, etc... So, can someone tell me why that is? Also, what is
the extended version? Thanks in advance.

See... http://j-walk.com/ss/excel/index.htm
for a list of the various Excel versions.

I have never heard of an "extended" version of Excel.
