Default 2003 grid lines

A clients PC has a saved Excel workbook in which when you add new sheets
there are no grid lines.
The current sheet has the gridlines, but they are very pale. In fact Excel
as a whole is pale. Amending PC Display settings has no effect, other apps
display correctly.
Creating a new workbook, grid lines are visible, but again very pale.
I cannot find any setting relating to the grid lines, Excel color setting at
normal.

Look at Tools - Options - View
There's a checkbox for "Show gridlines", as well as an input box for
the Gridlines color

The cell fill colour could be set to 'white' rather than 'no fill'.
