Default EXCEL files locked for editing

The following problem occurred numerous times:

While working on an EXCEL file A.XLS, the program stops responding and I
have to terminate the application.

When I then try to open file A.XLS file, I get the message:

==== A.XLS is locked for editing by €˜USER. ====.

The USER is I and there are no other users.

How can I UNLOCK the file without restarting the PC?

EXCEL 2000 Ver. 9, (SP-3) running on W2K Ver 5 (SP-4).

Thank you for your help.

I'm not sure if this work work, but give it a try.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Then go to Task List. Choose the Prcesses Tab. If
you see EXCEL.EXE listed, select it by clicking it. Then click End Process.
Close the Task Manager window and try to open the file again.

Thank you, PCLIVE, I already tried this.

There was indeed an EXCEL.EXE process, although there was no EXCEL
application running. However, the process could not be terminated. The error
message was "Access is denied".
