I've used datalabels to display a character rather than a data marker.
There are a couple of third party Excel utilities which you can use,
both of which are free and easy to use:

Rob Bovey's Chart Labeler, http://appspro.com
John Walkenbach's Chart Tools, http://j-walk.com

Apply the characters from an extra worksheet range, and use the 'Center'
alignment of the labels.

I know I can elect not to display the symbol, and elect to show the series
name, and so could change the series name to a number, but this is
impractical.

Is there any way of using numbers instead of symbols on a scatter chart.
Then, the legend would still show the series name, but instead of both the
chart and the legend showing a symbol, they would show the series number.
