Thanks, John. I downloaded the zip file and opened it. But when I looked at
the add-ins list, it wasn't there. In what folder should the add ins file be
located? Maybe I put it in the wrong place. There were no directions on what
to do with the file.

Hi,

The page has a link to this explanation.
http://www.andypope.info/tips/tip010.htm

I do not dictate where you should store the addin, maybe I should but I
don't.
So you can put the file where ever you like on your pc and use the Addins
browse button to locate it.

Cheers
Andy

When you open the zip file you should see the Excel add-in file. Copy it and
paste it to a directory location of your choice.

At this point it's time to install the add-in. To do so and assuming Excel
2003, go to Tools - Add-Ins - Browse. Find the file that you just saved
and click on it. It should now appear in the Add-ins dialog box.

For more information on installing an add-in, search Excel's help for "Load
or unload add-in programs".

Default Where to find pattern fill add-in

Thanks, John. Pardon this lengthy reply. I have Excel 2007. Sorry I forgot to
say that.

Anyway, the procedure did not work. I followed the instructions in Excel's
help for "Load or unload add-in programs." I clicked Office ButtonExcel
OptionsAdd-Ins. Then selected Excel Add-Ins under the Manage box and clicked
Go. I got a little Add-Ins window with a list of add-ins (Analysis toolPak
and Analysis ToolPak - VBA were there and already checked) and Pattern Fills
was listed. I checked it and then clicked OK.

But then when I go to a chart and get the format data series menu for a bar
on a histogram and select Fill (or any other option) there is no option for a
pattern.

So then I started over and downloaded Andy Pope's Pattern Fills add-in. When
I went to extract the zip file, it asked for a password. Evidently I never
really unzipped it in the first place. So, I don't know what the password is
to unzip the file and I am still stuck.

It is important to me to be able to have a pattern fill as I print charts in
black and white and want to distinguish easily between series on a histogram.
I don't understand why pattern fill was deleted from 2003 for the 2007
version. Maybe you could tell the Excel designers to put it back in.

Anyway, any help you could give me would be much appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

I just downloaded the zip file from my site. There is no password on the
zip file.

The UI to Pattern fills have been reinstated in 2010.

I'm one step behind nonTechie, also on 2007. I'm using Firefox, so the file
downloads to a location. I then extract the .xlm file. I know where it is,
but I don't think Excel does. When I select "Go" I don't see the Pattern
Fills check box in the list with the Analysis Tools, etc. It seems like the
..xlsm needs to someplace where Excel knows where it is.

Hi,

Once installed the addin adds a button to the Layout and Format
contextual tabs when a chart is selected. It does not, can not, alter
the built-in MS dialogs. The web page does illustrate this.

Cheers

Hi Jag,

The add-in will not appear in the list just by pressing Go. Once the
dialog is open use the Browse... button to locate the file. Then it will
appear.
Once installed a new button will appear on the Layout and Format
contextual tabs when a chart is selected.

Cheers
Andy

Here is the solution, thanks to Andy Pope, an MVP. Activate the series (or
part of the chart you want patterns for). Under Chart Tools, click either
Layout or Format. A Patterns button will appear at the right end of the
toolbar. Click it and voila, we're in business again. Thanks Andy

I was able to get the add-in working fine. However, when I use the add-
in to fill a pattern in a shape, the pattern does not get printed.
Only the blank shape gets printed. Any ideas to fix this problem???
