Default excel is always formatted as text when opened

a colleague emails me a spreadsheet once a month and the numbers are always
in text format. She manually adds both text and numbers in different columns
but has always had that problem with her excel........I can not find anything
on how to fix it othere then to change the format to General everytime I get
it. Is her excel set up weird?
