Ron

Menu and Toolbar customizations are stored in your Excelx.xlb file

"x" is a version number like 9 for 2000, 10 for 2002 and 11 for 2003.

If it gets too large, it can become unstable.

Or perhaps if on a network, Excel is confused about where to store it.

Or you do not have permission to save to the folder where *.xlb is stored.

Do a search for this file. There could be more than one *.xlb file so may have
to check all copies to see which is loading.

Usually stored in..................

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel

When found, first rename the *.XLB file to *.OLD file. Note the size of this
file in kb.

Now close out Excel then re-open.

Make a few minor changes to a menu or toolbar then close Excel.

Does Excel create a new *.XLB file?

Is it basically the same size as the *.OLD file?

Reopen Excel. Have your changes stuck?

Default Menu bar won't save

Hi Gord

Tried at home
now I found the XLB file
after deleting it and rerun the program changing the menubar
a new XLB has been created and bar is saved

I probably mixed up excel 95-97 file with excel 2003programm

what happens is the standard menubar2003 appears
and the selfmade bar of the 97 file is connected to that standard
menubar
the standard Helpsection is now missing.

When I startup the 97 file I can see the standard Menubar
The program asks for enabling/disabling macros I disable the Macros
and see the selfmadebar is connected and visible.

There must be a code in that particular 97 file that says "show the
selfmade bar as well"
and do not safe.

Any idea ??

Best regards
Ron

Typical on the computer at work there is no XLB file at all excel2000
thats why I cannot change the menubar.

Default Menu bar won't save

Sounds like your workbook is creating the additions to your Menubar.

ToolsCustomizeToolbarsToolbars in Workbook(right-side)Attach.

Anything there you can unattach?

Or do you have Personal.xls opening hidden?

It is possible you have a Personal.xls left over from when Excel had a Menu
Editor.

Items were attached from your Personal.xls.

Do a search for XLSTART folder and remove the Personal.xls file to somewhere
else so it won't open.

Delete or re-name your *.xlb file again.

If you can't find what is adding the selfmade bar we can provide some code to
remove it permanently if it is a holdover from Excel 95.

Hi Gord

tried all options
The XLStart Map contains only exel11.xlb file

Think the file is mixed with 95 and 2003 code because all other files
work fine
do you have a code to remove the menubar ?

Default Menu bar won't save

Jim Rech has written an add-in to remove the left-over 95 menus from a workbook.

Can be d/l from Stepen Bullen's site.

http://www.oaltd.co.uk/MVP/Default.htm

Click on Jim Rech or scroll down the page to find RemoveMenus.zip

Unzip to your Office\Library.

Open Excel and ToolsAdd-ins. Find and check.
