Default excel time format

How can i format a cell that will display the ime as 08:00 when i enter 8? i
have tried using the format hh:mm but when i enter 8 the cell displays
00:00:00 and the formula bar shows 08/01/1900 00:00:00.

If I understand this right I have to write a macro to the the time to display
the way I want? i.e. 8 = 8:00?

You don't have to write the macro.

Chip has done that for you.
