Default Columns are in numbers

Using Excel 2000, my columns are arranged by number and not letters, so that
if I'm trying to create a formula to add cells A5 and B6, I get a #NAME ?
error because it does not see a cell A5 or B6, it sees R5C1/R6C2. Some way
to change this would be greatly appreciated.

Tools|Options|general tab|Uncheck the R1C1 Reference style.
