I presume that Excel won't read it; otherwise, you wouldn't have posted.

Normally the best practice is to create an Excel file out of the other
spreadsheet application. It will probably be a very old version Excel
file (Excel 5) but that doesn't matter.

If you don't have Quattro Pro around or the person cannot provide
you with an Excel version of the file, the next best bet, is to download
and install OpenOffice (openoffice.org) together with some
material also required from Sun (sun.com) it will be about 60MB althogether,
not a problem if you have high speed access. Some more detail
on other uses of OpenOffice on my backup.htm page (recovery of
data from Excel files that Excel decides is corrupted) so it might
be something you need again sooner or later.
