Default column header labels are numbered but need to be lettered

I need column heads to be lettered but both column and rows are numbered ..
help !

Which version of Excel are you using?

In 2007 go to the office button and down to Excel Options, in the formula
tab unselect the checkbox labeled R1C1 reference style.

I am sure the same checkbox exists in earlier versions under Tools, Options
in the menu bar.

Change under Excel Options.
