Default Peculiar Date problem

One column is filled with dates but in each cell one can see the dates in
number format (though the formatting has been selected as date type) and at
the same time each cell will give the date near the space provided adjacent
to the formula bar but in the cell it will display the number.

Please suggest what could be the problem??

One possibility, try hitting CTRL+`

The ` character can be found to the left of the 1 key.

It's a bit of Excel funtcionality that allows you to view formulas instead of
the results of those formulas. Can be quite useful. Most people who get
caught out by this have activated it by mistake.

Just to add...

It's the short cut key for: Tools|Options|View tab|Formulas
