Open the template through Windows Explorer, not through FileNewTemplate.

You want to be working on the template, not a copy.

To make sure the stripes stay as white, gray, white, gray select A3:A500

FormatConditional FormattingFormula is: =MOD(ROW(),2)=1

This will force Excel to retain the striping even when database is sorted.

Also add the borders to the new cells same as the first 39 rows.

Another thing I have noticed is that when inputing data and going to the
next row, it doesn't always change the background color of the row so for
instance the rows will be Gray, Gray, white, Gray, White, white, white, etc.
