For a brief explanation, use Excel's built-in Help to search for "percentile
worksheet function" (without the quotes).

The 1st and 3rd quartiles are the 25th and 75th percentiles.

Excel uses a somewhat nonstandard approach, making the lowest data value the
0th percentile and the highest data value the 100th percentile.

When ranked, the intermediate values correspond to steps of 1/(n-1) for
percentiles, and specific percentiles are interpolated (linear) between
those values.
