What is the formula used to calculate the 1st and 3rd quartile?

For a brief explanation, use Excel's built-in Help to search for "percentile worksheet function" (without the quotes). The 1st and 3rd quartiles are the 25th and 75th percentiles. Excel uses a somewhat nonstandard approach, making the lowest data value the 0th percentile and the highest data value the 100th percentile. When ranked, the intermediate values correspond to steps of 1/(n-1) for percentiles, and specific percentiles are interpolated (linear) between those values. - Mike www.mikemiddleton.com |
