Try right click on the sheet tab & select delete

I believe the OP's point is that it should be possible using only the
keyboard. It is.

[Alt]+H, D, S

also (for now)

[Alt]+E, L

The latter is the current menu command keystroke sequence (Edit
deLete sheet). The former is the new ribbon keystroke sequence: Home
tab, Delete, delete Sheet.
