Default Autofilter grayed out - why?

I'm having a problem getting autofilter to work with a specific Excel file.
The file contains about 15 worksheets and on every sheet autofilter is
grayed out. Even when I create a new, blank worksheet in the file, same
thing.

Is there a file setting or something else that could account for this
happening in this file? None of the worksheets have protection turned on,
and all other option settings seem to be fine.

I'm using Excel 2003, and if I create a new file or go to any other file I
have, autofilter is not grayed out.

Thanks for any help given.

Are objects hidden?
To unhide then, choose ToolsOptions
On the View tab, under Objects, select Show All, or Show Placeholders.
Click OK

Could be you have more than one worksheet selected.

Do you see the word [Group] on the Title Bar?

Right-click a sheet tab and "ungroup sheets".
