Default Autofilter not working correctly...

Lately I have been having issues with the AutoFilter on a few
select workbooks. These workbooks are not necessarily huge (less that 2M).

Here's my Excel 2003 problem - no matter how I activate the AutoFilter...
whether I highlight an entire column, a set of data, or a row of data, the
filter does not work properly. The arrows appear€¦ but when I try to click on
the arrows they do not "click" and no data is shown. If I close Excel and
re-open the same workbook it sometimes will allow me to filter once or twice
but then it stops working. When it stops working after I have filtered and I
unselect "AutoFilter" under the Data menu the data does not "expand" it
remains "filtered", the filter arrows disappear, and I have to unhide rows to
expand my list manually. All other aspects of the spreadsheet work properly.
It does not €ślock up€ť it is only the AutoFilter that does not work properly.
Is that weird or what? How can I fix this?
