Default Vlookup help

I am trying to compare SSN (social security number) from one file with SSN
from another file. When I use the vlookup command, I get N/A for a result.
Both SSN files are formatted Special SSN so they should work.
When I copy one SSN to its mate on the second file, I get a valid result for
that entry. This tells me that both SSN files are incompatible. Any
suggestions?

Are you sure both are numbers? It sounds as if one is text and the other
number
