Default equal sign in front of date in formual bar

In an existing spreadsheet when I enter new dates in blank cells the tool bar
shows the date with an equal sign in front "=06Mar06" and the spreadsheet has
00Jan00. I have tried changing formating and coping from good date cells. I
even inserted a new column with the same results.
