Default Entering a hyphen into a cell

When I enter a hyphen (-) into a cell, them move out of the cell it
immediately tries to start entering a formula or function. As soon as I move
out with the arrow buttons, each cell I move to keeps the dashed/dotted
border. Selecting a cell and pressing the enter key creates a formula. How
do I turn this off?

Since that is a legitimate way of entering a formula, I would suggest either
pressing enter or preceeding the hyphen with a single quote (').
