Suppose you are having the dates from col A1 to A6.
Select the col A1:A1
Go to FormatConditional formatting
Select Formula is from the drop down below condition1 and enter
=($A1<TODAY()) in the next cell and select format and select any colour
from patterns and say apply

Hope this is what you are looking for

set a cell equal to the date that you want to compare the dates on your
spreadsheet to. for example put this date in cell A1

highlight one of the cells that contains a date that you want to
evaluate.

goto the menu bar and choose format -conditional formatting

set condition 1 = cell valie is , less than, and then choose cell a1 in
the next field (should look like this =$A$1)

then set the setting to your liking by highlighting or bolding the
test.

now use the copy format tool to all of your cells with dates and the
ones that are less than cell A1 will have the formatt that you chose in
the conditinal formatting setting.
