Default Any way to have more than three conditional formats?

We would like to set the background color of cells depending on their
values. But the number of legitimate values is higher than three. There are
at least five legimate values plus it would also be nice to display
illegimate values yet another color. Any tricky ways, like having a legend
on the spreadsheet and looking up and applying the background color from the
legend?

Thanks,

Bill
