There are certainly differences, but for example supposing I wanted to nest
an OFFSET function within a SUM function to create a dynamic range for the SUM, then I could simply type =SUM(OFFSET( and then hit the FX icon to give me the list of fields to fill in for the OFFSET function - Is that perhaps what you were looking for?
