Default Cell Edges in Excel

How do I restore cell edges (the side edge lines of a number of cells in a
column)that have disappeared in an Excel worksheet?

Gridlines?

Tools|Options|view tab
(and turn it on)

But if you've applied a fill color to that area, then you won't see the
gridlines.

I like to turn off gridlines and use borders (format|cells|border tab).
