when i type (C) I get the copywrite symbol instead

Try clicking Tools AutoCorrect
Look for the line Replace: (c), With: ©
and delete it

Bob,

If you want to avoid deleting an entry from the AutoCorrect list then try
entering:

(c <space )

then after pressing Enter go back into the cell and delete the space.
