Default Finding Names

Here is the problem that I am having. I have three columns with
'employee #', 'Last Name', and 'First Name'.

A B C
Emp# Last First
1 Smith John
2 Doe Jane
. . .
. . .
. . .

I want to set up a formula so that when I input the number "1" on cell
D1, "Smith" will populate E1, and "John" will populate F1. And if I
were to input "2" in cell D1, "Doe" will populate E1, and "Jane" will
populate F1. Thank you very much.

It sounds like a perfect use of =vlookup().

You may want to read Debra Dalgleish's notes:
http://www.contextures.com/xlFunctions02.html (for =vlookup())
